2023 Baker Seed Co. Trial Results
Trial Summary
2023 was a good season to test some of the new genetics coming through the breeding programmes, of which most have lived up to our high expectations.
A wet summer, good autumn sowing conditions, a very wet winter, and dry September/early October presented many challenges in 2023.
Our trial programme again consisted of three times of sowing (TOS), 6th of April, 28th of April and the 22nd of May, evaluating new genetics of Wheat, Oats, Barley and Triticale.
Our first time of sowing was followed by considerable rainfall event the following day, its suspected that this damaged some of the seed leading to poorer plant establishment and vigour. Drymatter (DM) cuts for the grazed treatments in TOS1 were taken on the 28th of June, removing an average of 1.312mt/ha for wheat, and 2.624mt/ha of Oats and 2.731 of Barley. Due to the lack of vigour and variability of the DM results in TOS1, we made the call to only conduct the one cut.
For the first time in a long time wheat yield in TOS1, all be it not by much, was off the pace of the other two TOS, a slight step back considering the 1-1.5mt to the ha that they usually achieve over the later sown wheats.
It’s timely to remind that early sowing benefits many farm programs by extending resources and ensuring main season varieties are planted early to maximise potential.
This season saw some welcome new wheat genetics in the for the Anzac Day sowing window. The Optimal time for sowing Major, Leverage, Sundancer & Genie. These varieties offer choice for disease resistance, standability, acid and sodic tolerance, and have performed well in our trials and in seed production.
Oats, took out the award for highest yielding species, with new milling oat Goldie cracking over 7mt/ha in our trails. Great news for this break crop and breeding is that the 3 varieties at the top of the oat yield chart Goldie, Koala and Archer are all new releases from the last 12 months.
Barley performed well, its important to note that this was harvested at the same time as the wheat, probably 3 weeks later than desired. It was a year for the top end Yielders, Neo CL lived up to expectations, and Planet showed us why it has been so widely adopted in the mid to high rainfall environments.
We wish to thank Kalyx for their professionalism and effort throughout the season.
Thank you for your custom and interest in these trials, we look forward to working with you in 2024.
