About Us
Baker Seed Co. is a wholly Australian Family owned seed business based in Rutherglen, North East Victoria, which has been producing & processing seed for four generations.
Baker Seed Company was established in 1969 of the back of sub clover production, and in 1972, Geoff Baker designed and built the first processing plant, revamping the “Old Paroo” winery into a seed cleaning plant.
Seed production from the Baker properties surrounding Rutherglen quickly expanded to sub clover, cereal, lupin, faba beans and canola.
The advent of the PBR act in the 90’s and the commercialisation of plant breeding, saw consolidation within the seed industry. This created a new pathway for the supply of quality seed, Baker Seed Co. took this opportunity to expand and invest long term in an industry it had become passionate about.
Since then Baker Seed Co has invested heavily in our infrastructure, making us one of the most modern and capable seed facilities in Australia. Today we provide a comprehensive range of seed and processed grains to a wide variety of industries.
Baker Seed Co. is part of a wider family business comprising of two main enterprises working in unison and ran by Geoff Baker’s son-in-law’s Ashley Fraser (Baker Seed Co), Andrew Russell (Lilliput AG).
Lilliput Ag manage 2,500ha of cropping country surrounding Rutherglen, in NE Victoria. Being in a medium season higher rainfall environment means that broadacre seed crops can be produced with relatively low risk of production failure, whilst maximising seed yields.
Although sub clover seed production has dropped out of the rotation these days, Lilliput Ag produce seed wheat, barley, faba beans, triticale, oats, lupins, safflower and canola for Baker Seed Co and a number of other seed companies.
