Get ready for an exciting opportunity to discover the future of grain growing at this year’s Henty Machinery Field Days!

Thanks to a collaboration between the Henty Machinery Field Days Co-operative and Baker Seed Co, attendees will have the chance to explore 47 different cereal and new pasture varieties planted across expansive demonstration plots.

This year’s plots, managed by Baker Seed Co, showcase a diverse array of dual-purpose and milling varieties, giving visitors a firsthand look at the latest advancements in agriculture. According to Aaron Giason, Business Development Manager at Baker Seed Co, the two-hectare demonstration site serves as a perfect complement to the fully replicated trial sites in Rutherglen, where elite germplasm is identified within breeding programs.

What to Expect

This year, visitors will find 32 varieties of wheat, 11 varieties of barley, and 4 varieties of oats – a significant expansion from last year’s showcase. This comprehensive display represents one of the largest ever presented at Henty, offering a mix of new and upcoming varieties alongside tried-and-true favorites.

In addition to cereals, the site features plantings of rye corn, annual ryegrass, and perennial mixes, all carefully selected and sown to create a vibrant and informative display. The inclusion of demo strips featuring ryegrass, clovers, herbs, and Baker Seed Co’s Pasture and Forage mixes adds another layer of interest, reflecting the diverse options available to modern grain growers.

A Nod to Tradition

The plots were sown using an old Connor Shea disc seeder, coupled with a Massey Ferguson tractor from Henty’s 60-year history, highlighting the blend of innovation and tradition that defines the agricultural sector. Fertiliser inputs were meticulously planned to ensure optimal growth, with 80kg/ha MAP plus Impact at sowing, followed by top dressing with Urea at 200kg/ha.
